 Main C bar open

Main C
The Main C bar is open to the public, although I must admit that the foyer still looks just a little cluttered. The box office systems run Windows so of course are causing headaches for the IT guy… the back end of most of C is on Linux though and most of the office machines are Macs :)

The 6 TFT screens above the box office desks are for up-to-the-minute information on what’s on in the various spaces and venues, this is all a completely bespoke Linux-based system that I’m yet to see in operation but am curious to see how it turns out (and secretly compare it to Qpid for those of you reading this that remember it :P)

 C electric

Morph’s working over at C electric which has got to be one of the coolest venues ever - it was Pod Deco last year at the fringe but for various (read financial) reasons Pod aren’t about this year - her venue is the now closed Odeon on Clerk St which was once a 2,000 seater art deco theatre / cinema and is now considered an “At Risk” building as developers continuously want to destroy it to build flats. I hope to get some pictures of it up here some time soon- particularly the bits you wont see by coming to see shows there. But you really should come see them anyway!

Work at C
Well based on the fact it’s taken me thins long to make the first posting since moving through to Edinburgh for the Fringe you’ll have gathered I’ve been quite busy! It’s all been going quite well over at central and the crew are great, it’s looking like it will be one of the best fringes yet.

More soon! :)

We have 12 days until the start of Fringe 2005 … and just over 30 hours until the start of fringe for us…

I’m supposed to be in Edinburgh (or more accurately, in C!) at 9am for a staff meeting… fun… except for the fact that I live in Glasgow, can’t park anywhere near the venue, don’t have accomodation in Edinburgh quite yet and erm, havent actually got my contract yet….

Ah, it’s good to be back! :P

C Central
Well it appears I will be working Fringe this year with none other than C venues!
C are one of the biggest venue organisers on the fringe with 14 theatres in 5 venues and 170 shows.

It looks like I’ll be working in C Central which is in the Carlton hotel on the bridges, like everything else on the fringe we’re not exactly well paid - but hey, it’s fun, and you get to see loads of stuff for freeee :P

 Gaffa Tape Wallet

gaffa wallet 2

gaffa wallet content

Everyone in the world of theatre knows that Gaffa tape can fix almost anything - it can also make useful stuff like my new wallet - yep it’s made of nothing more than gaffa tape - you can buy these things from places like ducti or you can make your own.

I’m not completely happy with it and am sure I could do better if I either spent longer or didnt use a blunt instrument to cut it all so I’ll probably make another one at some time … but it uses a lot of gaffa!

It’s amazing what people will make with gaffa.

Every now and then I find something interesting or amusing on Flickr - here’s today’s… this is from a BBC documentary about the introduction of a public electricity service…

Proves that even back then people had an incredible knack of getting signs soo wrong!

As most of you will know I’m forcing myself to tidy my flat a bit at the moment as such I inevitably find things I forgot I had like batteries for my titanium powerbook (which I no longer have) and as such they end up on eBay… Also up for sale is my bluetooth GPS kit for Palm OS (Navman GPS 4460) and soon probably my Sony Clie UX50 PDA.

I want a new PDA or possibly a Series 60 smartphone - havent quite decided yet… either way I’ve decided to raise money from the old stuff BEFORE buying a new toy for once in my life!

 In-car iPod… easier way.

AIWA CDC-R504MP
After our earlier attempt to make my CD player work with my iPod … we decided to take the simpler approach and find a either a casette player (the irony, using old technology to work with the newest!) or a cheap car CD player with a Line-In on the front of it.

We found the latter in the Aiwa CDC-R504MP. I hadn’t really considered AIWA for much before but as they’re now owned by Sony it’s basically a Sony CD player at a fraction of the cost.

I must admit I’m impressed - the quality is fairly good (as good as can be expected with manufacturer-fitted speakers!) and certainly seems better than my JVC CD player… can probably be put down to it having a better amp in it. Also it plays MP3 CD’s… so when I forget to charge my iPod I can still have around 200 songs available to me on a single disc.

Either way, it’s great to be able to listen to something other than the same 14 songs constantly :)

 in-car iPod… almost.

iPod Car Stereo

One of the reasons I have an iPod is to listen to music in my car…. unfortunately it never really happened. My car has a CD player only and therefore using cassette adaptors (as I did in my old car) is out, and the head unit doesnt have a line in or CD changer input (the original factory-fit one would have unfortunately the previous owner of my car saw fit to replace it (very badly i might add) with a JVC cd player.

So, Andy and I were rather bored and decided to modify the CD player to allow an iPod to be used as an input… this also wasn’t that successful but there’s an interesting collection of photos with captions.
